Experiments with Zentangle

The romantic rains conspires

with the guilty sunday siesta

and my sedated soul

resigns to the flow

Yes, I am poetic today.

Nothing can beat the combination of a week off with a cool rainy day. I have heard people saying that creativity needs a catalyst and the day was good enough to nudge my senses.

I was thinking to experiment with the art form called ‘zentangle’ for a long time. Once I saw a finished work of an artist in Instagram and I started exploring more about it.

It’s a therapeutic artform.

Since childhood everyone has a habit of doodling in our class room notebooks. However we hardly paid attention to the fact that doodling helped our mind to relax and experience a flow of thoughts in that moment. The random patterns and pen strokes create a composition which is soothing to the eyes.

Zentangle is taking the random doodling to the next level where one can experience the joy of creating random patterns and enjoy the process of creation.

It is one of the great destressing practice.

I wanted to capture the rainy day in an artwork using zentangle. As I started working on it I observed what is happening to me and my thoughts.

  • There was creative block when I started but the moment I made a mark on the paper the patterns started coming through
  • Zentangle teaches patience, each pen stroke should be neat and for that the mind needs to go with the flow
  • As we try to hunt for more patterns to make the composition look beautiful we realise that our mind is opening up to common shapes and figures which we often ignore like single straight lines or a simple circle
  • It has great ability to capture all the symbols you want for depicting the emotion one carries. I wanted to show paper boats, lightning, flora and fauna, water waves, clouds, varied direction of rain drops and many more.
  • As we start building on the structure we can keep on detailing till the time we are satisfied
  • It is better to fill all the gaps in the composition

I wanted to make a video of the artwork however couldn’t manage.

I am planning to start a vlog as I keep exploring different art forms.

Let me know if you like my work and please do share your views on this blog.
